Investment Philosophy

My investment approach revolves around identifying financially strong companies that offer value based on their current prices, with an eye toward delivering solid returns. Once potential investments are identified, I thoroughly examine any warning signs—whether yellow or red flags—that might signal potential risks. I take a long-term view with a minimum investment horizon of 2-3 years. I’m particularly drawn to companies with durable competitive advantages, or what Warren Buffett calls an "economic moat." This concept refers to a business's ability to maintain its edge over competitors, ensuring sustainable profits and protecting its market share in the long run.

We can divide my approach into three parts, the business, the valuation and the portfolio management. Here you can find related posts for these three pillars:

Portfolio P&L Calculations

Moat Mind is built on full transparency—readers should be able to verify whether the reported P&L is accurate. That’s a rarity. Most publications either don’t report P&L at all or share numbers without a way for you to verify them.

For me, having skin in the game means holding myself accountable. If I can’t outperform the S&P 500 in the long run, then there’s no point in spending all this time—I'd be better off just investing in the index.

The portfolio remains fully invested at all times to ensure accurate comparisons. It is updated monthly using the closing prices from the last trading day. When changes occur—such as adding or removing stocks—they happen in two steps: first, an announcement is made, and then the portfolio is adjusted based on the next available closing prices.

On update days, any changes—such as stock additions, removals, or dividends—automatically trigger a recalculation of the portfolio’s performance, followed by a reindexing. The portfolio primarily invests in stocks from developed markets and measures its performance against three key benchmarks: RSP (S&P 500 Equal Weight), SPY (S&P 500 Market Cap-Weighted), and ACWI (All-World Index).
